Each of the three covers a selection of the most important origins and products in that group. A total of 54 different hides and skins are used to calculate the indexes. Within its group each product has a specific weight in the calculation of the index which depends on the importance of the product in the world trade. It is clear that a change in price of a dry hide from Kenya does not have the same influence on world market prices as a change in the price of Heavy Texas Steers from the USA. The indexes are also reflected in graphs. They have been continuously produced since April 1991 and are used worldwide by traders, tanners, organizations, manufacturers, arbitrators, governments, consultants, etc. The Indexes are updated every two weeks. On specific request of customers in the automobile and furniture branch an upholstery hide price index has been created and added to the report in October 2003. Updated every fortnight.
